Zippers and Latex - When They Work, When They Don't

Latex is one of the few materials for which the question of a zipper is genuinely worth considering. Because latex stretches, seals, and getting into it is an experience in itself, the choice matters more than it does with conventional fabric.

Here is what to consider:

FLEXIBILITY

Latex is highly stretchable. A zipper, by nature, is not. When added to a latex garment, a zipper must be carefully positioned to allow full movement without placing stress on the surrounding material. A poorly placed zip will pull, buckle, or fail over time.

AIRTIGHTNESS

One of the properties that makes latex feel the way it does is its seal against the body. A zipper interrupts that seal. Depending on placement, this can reduce the compression and sensation that define the latex-wearing experience.

STYLE AND FUNCTION

Some people prefer the clean, unbroken line of a zipperless garment. Others value the convenience. Both are valid — the right answer depends on the piece and the wearer.

TOX APPROACH

At TOX, we incorporate zippers only when essential or for deliberate aesthetic effect. Never at the expense of structural integrity and garment longevity.

For garments with a wide top opening like a tube dress, we do not add zippers. When a garment is properly powdered or lubricated, stepping in through the feet is easier than it looks — and significantly less stressful on the material than the repeated tension a zipper endures at its base.

The goal is always a garment that wears well, lasts, and feels right. Sometimes that includes a zipper. Often, it does not.
